Department of Thoracic Surgery

The Department of Thoracic Surgery was founded in 2001 and it has been offering treatment and education services at Hacettepe University adult hospital. Our leading surgeons both diagnose and treat various types of congenital and acquired thoracic diseases including both benign and malignant disorders of the lungs, pleura, thoracic wall and cavity (Mediastinum).

Services

Malignant Lung Diseases

Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death in Turkey and worldwide. Lung cancer within the operability limits (Early stage) can be treated successfully in our department. Surgical procedures can be palliative or curative. On average 2-4 units of blood is required for these kind of operations. During the post-operative period, all patients are followed up by specialist doctors and medical staff in our intensive care unit. Once patients’ general condition improve they are sent to ward for further care. Medical treatments and dietary arrangements are adjusted in the ward and patients are discharged within 6-8 days.

Benign Lung Diseases

Benign lung diseases are also treated in our department with excellent outcomes. Two to four units of blood is required for these kind of operations. Average post-operative stay is one day following these operations. Medical treatments and dietary arrangements are adjusted in the ward and patients are discharged within 6-8 days.

Treatment of Congenital Thoracic Diseases

Congenital defects arise from developmental disorders during pregnancy and mainly include pectus excavatum (sunken or hollowed chest) and pectus carinatum (pigeon chest). Congenital chest wall deformities, which can be repaired surgically, can both result in cardiac and respiratory dysfunction and severe psychological distress because of the imperfect physical appearance they lead to.

Other Diseases

Myastenia graves is a common disease of the thoracic cavity (Mediastinum) and caused by self-attack of the immune system towards the thymus gland. Surgical removal of the thymus gland in the mainstream treatment of this disease.

How can I Benefit from the Service?

Outpatient clinic examinations are given continuously from 08:00 to 12:00 and from 13:30 to 17:30 on every Wednesdays and Fridays. Examination and check-up appointments can be received by dialing 444 4 444 during office hours or by clicking the ‘Online Appointment’ link. 

Academic members’ examination and check-up appointments can be received by personally applying to outpatient secretariat or via the telephone numbers given below.
